This is an original 1870 Franco-Prussian War Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, awarded during the 1870–1871 conflict and produced in the correct oversized format, measuring approximately three times the size of a standard Iron Cross. The Grand Cross represented the highest class of the award and was reserved for senior military leadership, making examples of this scale and quality historically significant.

This example is correctly manufactured with three-piece construction, featuring a proper iron core sandwiched between two joined silver frames. Stamped into the upper rear flange, just to the left of the suspension eye, is a clearly visible “800” silver content mark. Slightly to the right are a stamped “21”, along with a crown and half-moon, consistent with period silver markings. The cross is suspended from a correctly proportioned white-bordered black ribbon, fitted with a rounded suspension loop that is also marked “800.” The suspension ring and ribbon appear to be from a later era than the award itself.

This piece represents an authentic and historically important example of Imperial German military decoration from the Franco-Prussian War era.
