This rare 1882 Holbein Society facsimile edition of The Romance of Theuerdank is a remarkable reproduction of one of the most celebrated illustrated works of the early 16th century. Originally printed in Augsburg in 1519, the text was commissioned under Emperor Maximilian I and authored by Melchior Pfinzing, serving as a chivalric narrative glorifying Maximilian’s courtship of Mary of Burgundy and his broader exploits.
Printed in Manchester by the Holbein Society, this edition reflects the organization’s mission to preserve and reproduce historically significant illustrated works. Measuring approximately 38 cm, the volume is presented in softcover (paperback) format and retains its striking series of woodcut illustrations, faithfully reproduced from the original Renaissance masterpiece. These illustrations are attributed to notable artists of the period, including Hans Burgkmair, Leonhard Beck, Hans Schäufelein, and others, making the work a visual as well as literary landmark.
Historical Significance
Theuerdank stands as one of the great literary-artistic achievements of the Renaissance, blending propaganda, romance, and knightly idealism into a richly illustrated epic. It reflects the self-mythologizing culture of Maximilian I’s court, where art and literature were used to shape imperial legacy. Facsimile editions such as this, produced in the 19th century, are themselves collectible for their role in preserving and disseminating early printed masterpieces to a wider audience.
