This fascinating 19th-century Belgian Flobert breech-loading rifle is an attractive example of one of the earliest practical small-caliber cartridge sporting rifles. Chambered for an estimated 6mm Flobert cartridge, the rifle features extensive engraved decoration to the stock, buttplate, and barrel, giving it a refined appearance beyond that of a simple utility firearm. Invented by Louis-Nicolas Flobert in the mid-19th century, the Flobert system became enormously popular throughout Europe for target shooting, indoor shooting galleries, pest control, and recreational marksmanship. These low-powered rimfire rifles are widely regarded as important milestones in the development of modern cartridge firearms and played a significant role in introducing affordable breech-loading technology to civilian shooters. Belgian gunmakers became particularly well known for producing quality Flobert rifles in a wide range of configurations, from simple utility models to highly decorative sporting examples.
This rifle displays excellent decorative character and strong period appeal. While the firearm appears mechanically capable of operation, a crack is present near the firing mechanism area and, as such, we recommend it be acquired as a display and collector piece rather than for use.
