A rare and complete 19th-century gambler's traveling set, believed to be of English or American origin. Includes a 4-barrel C. Sharps & Co. derringer, a Bowie knife marked "Brookes & Crookes, Sheffield" with a silver-mounted bone or ivory grip and in leather sheath with stamped playing card motifs.
The set also contains dice (some porcelain), poker chips, a steamboat player's card deck in leather case, a wood bullet holder, and a leather dice pouch, all housed in a wooden case with brass shield on lid (key missing). Such sets were symbols of high-stakes riverboat and frontier culture, combining self-defense, gambling tools, and personal status items in one portable kit.
