Maker Marked "Down Bros." and "OPPOSITE Guy's Hospital". Most of the original knives and tools remain, and some tools are marked LONDON. Down Brothers were well-renowned medical instrument makers that specialized in ear, nose, and throat surgery. They later became Downs Surgical Ltd. They had offices in London, Sheffield, Scotland, Canada, The United States of America, Australia, and Ireland. Their London offices were at 3 and 4 St. Thomas' Street, Borough, London, S.E. This address was opposite Guy's hospital, a useful position for a surgical instrument maker (as marked on the box). These tools seemed to have made their way to America. Given that they were from London, they might have been used by a Confederate Surgeon but no proof of that is available.
