This is a fine American Militia Infantry Officer's Sword, dating to approximately 1835-1845, featuring a distinctive eagle-head pommel, a finely etched and blued blade (cut down from original length), and a beautiful handguard with patriotic and martial motifs.

The cracked ivory grip adds a layer of original depth and charm, reflecting the aging of organic materials over nearly two centuries. Though the blade has been shortened, the intricate etching and quality of the construction make this an excellent representative of early 19th-century American officer's weapons.

These swords were carried by officers in the many independent state militias active during the Jacksonian and Antebellum periods. The eagle pommel, a distinctly American motif, symbolized liberty and martial readiness. Swords like this would have been worn in full dress uniform and sometimes seen service during conflicts like the Second Seminole War (1835-1842) or Mexican-American War (1846-1848). They also reflect the burgeoning American arms industry, as homegrown craftsmen sought to create distinctive, patriotic pieces rooted in European tradition but styled for the growing republic.
