Offered here is an extraordinary 18th-century American dagger, likely produced during or shortly before the Revolutionary War period, featuring a wooden hilt with carved skull and crossbones motif, long associated with Freemasonry, piracy, and death symbolism.
The dagger retains its original brass and leather sheath, showing fine patina and aged surface texture. The blade is narrow, double-edged, and tapering to a sharp point, perfect for concealment and close combat. Recently cleaned and oiled (6/29/22), it remains structurally sound.
Skull-and-crossbones symbiology was heavily employed by 18th-century Freemasons in association with mortality, resurrection, and initiation rites. It also bears historical connection to pirate symbiology, especially in the colonial Caribbean and Atlantic seaboard, and to early American secret societies. Daggers of this style were often privately made or locally forged, typically carried by naval officers, revolutionary sympathizers, or members of Masonic lodges with martial leanings. This piece is a rare and compelling example of crossover iconography between early American identity, secret orders, and wartime survival. Whether tied to Masonic ritual, revolutionary sentiment, or naval tradition, it is an evocative and highly unusual, edged weapon from the founding era of the United States.
