This exceptional mid-18th century French hunting sword was crafted by Maitre Pichon, a renowned master sword cutler (“fourbisseur”) in service to Monsieur le Comte d’Artois, the future King Charles X of France. Dating to approximately 1750–1760, the sword is a remarkable example of aristocratic weaponry at the height of French refinement. Less than half of one percent of swords produced during this period featured full silver hilts, making this an extraordinarily rare example.

The hilt is an extraordinary silver-mounted ensemble, featuring reverse-facing dog head quillons and a stag's head pommel, both sculpted with fine detail and hallmarked in silver. The grip is carved from ebony, adding further contrast and elegance to the weapon’s silhouette. The blade is engraved "S.H." and bears the initials "H.D.", likely referencing the noble owner or recipient. Though the original scabbard is not present, the sword remains in a remarkable state, showcasing the superior workmanship and symbolism of the hunt that was favored by French nobility.

Such swords were more than functional, they served as status symbols and were frequently worn as court dress or gifted among high-ranking aristocrats. During the American War of Independence, numerous French officers and diplomats brought similar swords with them to America, often as ceremonial sidearms or personal weapons. Given Pichon’s known clientele and royal connections, this piece would have been commissioned by or for someone of considerable standing, possibly even a French officer under General Rochambeau.
