American Revolutionary War Era Massive Spontoon Spear Polearm with Axe-Form Ricasso

This American Revolutionary War era 18th-century massive long Spontoon Spear polearm is a bold and highly unusual weapon mounted on a heavy wooden shaft with a large, aggressive pointed metal butt point. The head features an axe-form ricasso, giving the weapon both thrusting and chopping capability. This practical design would have allowed the blade to be used for stabbing, cutting, or even pulling and striking at a rider, making it a serious foot soldier’s weapon rather than a purely ceremonial polearm. Its weight, proportions, and functional form give it tremendous battlefield presence.  The strange Axe-shaped Ricasso could form two functions – the waist on a Boar Spear to reinforce the spear thrust and also as a hunting spear wings designed to stop the spear from penetrating too deeply into a human or to catch enemy weapons.

Polearms remained useful in the 18th century despite the dominance of firearms, especially in militia, guard, naval, frontier, and close-quarters contexts. Spears, pikes, halberds, and hybrid polearms offered reach, stopping power, and intimidation, particularly against cavalry or in confined defensive positions. The American Revolutionary War era saw a wide variety of practical polearms, including locally made or modified examples that reflected immediate battlefield needs rather than strict European regulation patterns.
