This American Revolution and earlier era spontoon is a strong 18th-century polearm mounted on a wood pole, possibly period, and retaining an impressive original long metal butt cone. The piece measures approximately 76 1/2 inches overall, with a 10 1/2 inch spontoon head and a notably large 7 1/2 inch metal butt cone. The survival of the butt cone is a major point of interest, as these lower fittings were often lost, separated, or replaced over time. Together, the iron head, long shaft, and substantial metal butt fitting give the piece the complete visual presence expected from an 18th-century command polearm.

Spontoons were carried throughout the Colonial America and Revolutionary War era by officers, sergeants, and other ranks of authority. They served as both practical weapons and visible symbols of command, helping identify leadership within the line, maintain formation, protect the colors, and communicate authority on the battlefield. The butt cone also served an important functional purpose, protecting the end of the shaft and allowing the polearm to be grounded securely during formation, guard, or ceremonial use.

This is a highly displayable Revolutionary War era polearm with excellent proportions and unusually strong completeness thanks to the surviving long metal butt cone. The substantial overall length, possibly period wooden pole, original head, and large butt fitting make it an appealing piece for collectors of Colonial American arms, 18th-century military polearms, officer weapons, and Revolutionary War battlefield material.

Dimensions: Approximately 76 1/2 inches overall, with a 10 1/2 inch head and 7 1/2 inch metal butt cone.
