A rare and elegant 18th-century French officer’s weapon from the American Revolution.
This trefoil rapier, circa late 1700s, features a pierced guard and original decorative chain hand guard—a feature rarely seen intact on surviving examples. Its trefoil-form blade, raised grip, and balanced design made it a favored choice among American officers influenced by French military aesthetics.

It comes with its original leather scabbard, which retains the rare belt hanger despite its overall worn condition. The scabbard is missing its lower portion and tip, consistent with genuine field wear from the period.

This piece, measuring approximately 37.75" in total length, reflects the refined craftsmanship of French bladesmiths and offers a significant addition to any serious Revolutionary War or militaria collection.

Features:

  • Circa 18th-century French officer’s trefoil rapier
  • Original pierced guard and decorative chain hand guard
  • Raised grip for improved handling
  • Comes with original leather scabbard (partial, with belt hanger)
  • Approx. Rapier: 37.5" L x 4" W | Scabbard: 25.5" L
  • Provenance: Reputable U.S. auction house
Condition: Honest wear – consistent with age and service use; significant field wear and patina. Scabbard partial, chain guard intact. “Salty” and full of historical character.
