This authentic socketed bronze axe dates to approximately 2000–1000 B.C., originating from the ancient Near Eastern region of Luristan. Cast in bronze with a ribbed body, pronounced socket, and rear loop for lashing, the axe was designed to be hafted onto a wooden shaft using cords or sinew, both now lost to time. The piece remains in unrestored condition, displaying excellent preservation for its age with a fully intact socket and a beautiful, naturally aged green-brown patina.
Looped socketed axes such as this were functional weapons and utilitarian tools used throughout the Bronze Age by warrior societies. Found across burial and settlement sites in the wider Luristan region, they reflect a technological shift in metallurgy and combat. The added loop provided greater stability when lashed, improving the durability of the weapon. This example, from a private European collection, offers a rare chance to own a weapon over three millennia old, an evocative link to the early warrior cultures of the ancient world.
