1780 Antique Map of North America by Rigobert Bonne – ‘Amerique Septentrionale’

This Antique Map titled "Amerique Septentrionale" was created circa 1780 by Rigobert Bonne (1727-1794), a renowned French cartographer. The map is extremely well colored, featuring hand-colored elements such as California, which is prominently depicted. The Southwest U.S. is labeled as "Nouv Mexique", with the lower portion also including "Mexique" and Central America.
This is an unframed, original paper map that has been carefully preserved and maintained.
This copperplate engraved map of North America was included in the "Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre", which was published in Paris by Guillaume Raynal in 1780.
The map features detailed and vibrantly colored depictions of the eastern half of the continent, which is currently a battleground in the ongoing American Revolution; but the western half is notably devoid of geographic information outside of a few scattered place names, including a prominent Sante Fe. (A later issue would fill the Pacific Northwest area with a large, fictitious Sea of the West).
Numerous Native American tribes are also noted on this map while the northern Arctic Circle seems to omit much hope for the Northwest Passage. Alaska displays an interesting archipelago configuration, with one of the largest islands labeled 'Alaschka'.
