This exceptional British flintlock blunderbuss with spring bayonet was manufactured by William Bond of London and represents one of the most dramatic and visually impressive firearm designs of the Victorian period. The blunderbuss features a 14-inch barrel transitioning from octagonal to round before flaring dramatically at the muzzle from approximately .75 caliber to nearly 1.25 inches in diameter. Most impressive is the integrated 10.5-inch spring-activated folding bayonet, which deploys by means of a slide mechanism at the rear of the barrel and locks securely into position at the muzzle. The barrel is marked "W Bond London" and retains British proof marks including Crown over GP and Crown over V. Overall length is approximately 30.25 inches.
Blunderbusses occupied a unique role in British firearms history and were favored for personal defense, coach protection, maritime service, and security work. Their flared muzzles made loading easier under stressful conditions and contributed to their intimidating appearance. Spring-bayonet examples are particularly desirable, combining the stopping power of a large-bore firearm with the close-combat utility of an instantly deployable blade. These combination weapons were expensive to produce and are far less common than standard blunderbuss configurations encountered today.
The firearm features a checkered hardwood stock, foliate engraved lockplate marked "W Bond," slide safety, ramrod, and engraved brass furniture including a partially engraved buttplate. The action remains functional and sparks correctly with the installed flint. The brass fittings retain attractive color and presentation, while the spring bayonet mechanism remains operational. Combining London maker attribution, spring bayonet configuration, flintlock operation, and strong visual appeal, this is an outstanding example of a highly collectible and increasingly scarce form of British defensive firearm.
