This is an original WWII-era British Enfield rifle grenade launcher cup, designed to mount onto the muzzle of the legendary Lee-Enfield bolt-action service rifle. The device is constructed of thick steel, with visible threading and impact-resistant chambering designed to withstand the concussive force of rifle grenade launching. The launcher shows wartime wear and finish loss consistent with field use, and remains in solid, well-preserved condition.
Rifle grenade launchers were an essential innovation during WWII, allowing infantry to fire explosive ordnance beyond standard hand-thrown range. The British system used specialized blank cartridges fired through the Enfield's barrel to propel grenades housed in this cup-style adapter. These launchers were primarily used with Mills bombs and No. 68 anti-tank grenades and became a vital tool for both Commonwealth infantry and Home Guard defense units, especially in anti-vehicle and fortification-clearing roles.
Surviving examples are relatively rare, particularly those in fully intact condition with visible wartime machining. This piece stands as a representative artifact of the British Army's adaptability and ingenuity under fire.
