An extraordinary Civil War artifact with rare features and named provenance.
This U.S. Model 1860 Whistle Sword is a highly unusual variation attributed to J.A. Joel & Co., complete with its original sheath and carry bag—an exceptionally rare survival. The piece retains the design of the standard 1860 Staff & Field Officer’s sword but integrates a functioning whistle element, likely for field signaling or ceremonial use.
Whistle swords are seldom encountered, and the added personalization to J.A. Joel & Co. enhances its historic and collector appeal. The blade bears elegant etching, and the grip features intact wire wrap and leather. The original fitted scabbard shows honest wear and a smooth patina, consistent with mid-19th-century field use.
