This English Renaissance Spear with Dismounting Hook, which is a Militia Version of the Italian Roncone, also called a Bill, dated circa 1600, was designed for both thrusting in combat and pulling riders from horseback. The sturdy spear tip delivered lethal thrusts, while the curved hook was used to unseat cavalry from their horse in the midst of battle. Though simpler than its Italian counterpart, it was deadly effective in battle. Despite its simple design and construction, few have survived due to its utilitarian nature, making this example a rare collector’s piece of early English weaponry.
