This extraordinarily scarce World War II Soviet sniper smock is a true battlefield camouflage garment, complete with its original drawstring hood and attached face veil. Constructed from durable cotton and printed in brown and green tones, the camouflage pattern is commonly referred to as the “Amoeba” design, developed to break up the human silhouette in forested and mixed terrain. Finding an example in this level of preservation is exceptionally uncommon.
Soviet sniper smocks were purpose-built for concealment and were used extensively by Red Army marksmen operating on the Eastern Front. Their loose, flowing construction and integrated face veils allowed snipers to blend seamlessly into natural surroundings. Similar camouflage concepts were later studied and, in rare cases, adapted or reused by German forces late in the war, making original examples highly studied and often debated among historians. Regardless of attribution nuances, original WWII sniper camouflage garments are among the most elusive categories of field gear to survive.
This smock comes with impeccable museum-level provenance and represents a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic piece of sniper equipment from the most brutal theater of World War II. It is a visually striking, historically important textile artifact that would anchor any advanced WWII or sniper-focused collection.
Provenance: The Late Samuel Presley Nesmith Jr. Texas Museum of Military History Collection.
