During the Korean War, he earned the prestigious Silver Star as part of the 1st Cavalry Division, 7th Cavalry (Infantry) Regiment. In the VietnamWar, he was awarded the Legion of Merit and a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a second Legion of Merit for his exceptional leadership as G-3 (Operations and Training) of the XXIV Corps and as Commanding Officer of the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division, from 1968 to 1969.
