This is a 1957 denazified government-authorized re-issue of the “Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub” (Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves), a postwar version of one of the most recognized German military honors associated with WWII. While the original wartime Knight’s Cross and its higher grades were awarded for exceptional bravery and leadership on the battlefield, this 1957 pattern was legally authorized by the Federal Republic of Germany and produced so that veterans could wear their awards without prohibited symbols.
This example features a silver frame marked “800”, a black enamel core with pleasant mild patina, and a crisp “1939” date on the lower arm. The reverse exhibits a finely vaulted profile with the classic stepped rim typical of high-quality production. The separately applied oak leaves cluster is also in 800 silver, reflecting the Oak Leaves grade traditionally denoting a distinguished subsequent honor above the basic Knight’s Cross. It is accompanied by its full-length tri-color silk ribbon showing honest age patina and presented in its original presentation box, complete with interior lining and functional fittings, making it a complete display set. This is a complete and visually striking example of a 1957 German government-authorized Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, well suited for the serious Third-Reich collector seeking a luxury postwar presentation piece with original ribbon and case.
