This outstandingly fascinating German World War II Der Deutsche Automobil-Club (D.D.A.C.) grouping brings together three highly display-worthy period items: a BeVo-embroidered sleeve patch, a multi-colored enamel D.D.A.C. stick pin, and an exceptional 1939 D.D.A.C. road condition map of Germany and surrounding Europe. Together, these pieces form a cohesive snapshot of civilian motoring culture in the Third Reich.
The highlight of this grouping is unquestionably the 1939 fold-out road map booklet, titled “Strabenzustandskarte von Deutschland”, printed at a scale of 1:1,100,000. The map remains remarkably vibrant, with strong original colors, crisp lines, and clearly legible street, town, and city names. Coverage extends far beyond Germany itself, stretching north into Denmark and across much of central Europe, offering a fascinating period view of the continent on the eve of total war. An especially compelling feature is the detailed D.D.A.C. key and ledger panel printed alongside the map, outlining road conditions, classifications, and travel guidance for motorists of the era. While showing expected fold wear and light handling marks from use, the map remains intact, clean, and visually impressive, easily worthy of framing.
The accompanying BeVo sleeve patch shows only minor edge fraying and light age toning, consistent with period manufacture, while remaining in very good overall condition. The enamel D.D.A.C. badge, correctly maker marked GES. GESCH by F.B., retains undamaged enamel in black, red, white, and silver, with only light wear to the reverse and edges. Measuring approximately 10 x 8 cm, it was intended for wear or mounting as a visible symbol of club membership.
The D.D.A.C. functioned as Germany’s equivalent to the American AAA, promoting civilian motoring before and during the early war years. After 1933, all German automobile organizations were consolidated under the D.D.A.C. as part of the Nazi policy of Gleichschaltung, allowing the club to exist alongside, but subordinate to, the NSKK. Groupings like this illustrate the intersection of everyday civilian life, infrastructure, and state influence during the Third Reich.
This is a superb, display-ready grouping ideal for collectors of D.D.A.C. material, German WWII ephemera, or anyone seeking a tangible and visually compelling window into Europe as it existed on the brink of global conflict.
