This is an original German WWI Iron Cross 2nd Class, dating to 1914, accompanied by a very rare original silver Hindenburg presentation case. The Iron Cross was reinstituted in 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II, reviving the historic design first established in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars. Presentation sets of this nature, particularly those incorporating a sculptural silver case honoring Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg, were produced in limited numbers and are seldom encountered intact today.
The silver presentation box is crisply struck, with the lid bearing a high-relief portrait of Generalfeldmarschall von Hindenburg in full uniform, surrounded by an oak leaf wreath symbolizing strength and victory. The lid is detached from its hinge, though the case retains its original interior lining and velvet cushion with only minimal fraying. The Iron Cross itself is a superb example, retaining a fine finish and complete blackened iron core. The obverse features the Prussian crown on the upper arm, the “W” cypher of Kaiser Wilhelm II at center, and the date 1914 on the lower arm. The suspension ring is marked “FR.” Overall, this set stands as an exceptionally desirable example of Imperial German military decoration, combining a well-preserved WWI Iron Cross with a scarce and visually impressive period Hindenburg presentation case, making it a fine and unique addition to your collection.
