This historically significant German World War II medal, known as the "Frozen Meat Medal", was awarded to Gefreiten Erwin Rabel of Schneeraumkompanie-212 for his service during the Winter Battle in the East of 1941/42.
Officially named the “Eastern Front Medal” (Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42), this decoration was instituted on May 26, 1942, by Adolf Hitler and awarded to soldiers who participated in the first brutal winter campaign on the Eastern Front. The nickname “Frozen Meat Medal” arose among German troops due to the bitter cold, frostbite, and staggering casualties they endured in the face of Soviet resistance and subzero conditions. More than 3 million were issued, but personalized and documented examples, such as this one, are far scarcer and more desirable.
Accompanied by its original award document and custom-framed for preservation, this medal honors those who endured the extreme hardships of one of the most brutal campaigns of the war. The meticulous framing not only preserves its historical integrity but also highlights its value as both a collector's item and a tangible artifact from a pivotal moment in World War II history.
