German WW2 Black Overseas Side Cap with RZM Interior Label, Possible SS, No Exterior Insignia

This fascinating German World War II black overseas side cap, or Schiffchen, is an exceptionally clean and well-preserved example with a highly interesting RZM interior cloth label. The cap is constructed in a dark black wool body with the classic folded overseas cap form and is absent of exterior insignia. Based on the construction, color, and interior RZM label, we slightly lean toward this being a Waffen-SS M40 Panzer enlisted man's overseas cap, although we are not offering that attribution as definitive. Another possible identification is a Kriegsmarine garrison cap, and the absence of exterior insignia prevents a firm branch attribution. The cap itself remains in immaculate overall condition, with excellent shape, strong fabric, clean stitching, and very little visible wear.

The most intriguing feature of this piece is the surviving RZM label sewn to the interior. The Reichszeugmeisterei, or RZM, served as the central control office responsible for regulating approved manufacture and distribution of official NSDAP and related organization uniforms, insignia, and equipment. The label includes printed RZM text, Herstellerfirma Nr. 180, Serie 3, and a visible control number, making the interior particularly interesting from a collector and research standpoint. If this cap is indeed a Waffen-SS Panzer overseas cap, it would represent a highly desirable black wool field cap associated with German armored personnel. If instead Kriegsmarine-related, it remains an attractive and unusual wartime garrison cap with a strong period appearance.

Because the exterior insignia is absent, we strongly encourage all prospective bidders to carefully examine the photographs and form their own conclusions regarding exact attribution, period configuration, and originality. The cap may have been stripped, de-Nazified, never fully badged, or otherwise preserved in its current plain configuration. What remains is a very clean and compelling wartime German overseas cap with an excellent interior RZM label, strong construction, and outstanding display appeal. It is offered here as an uncertain but highly interesting example, with a slight leaning toward Waffen-SS M40 Panzer enlisted overseas cap attribution based on construction.
