This rare German WWII Dr. Fritz Todt Prize in Silver is a second-class example of a seldom encountered industrial war effort award. The large zinc pin is formed as an eagle with semi-folded wings looking left, standing on a scroll inscribed DR. FRITZ TODT. Beneath the scroll is a swastika within a cogwheel motif. The award has lost its original silver finish on the obverse, though the reverse retains some traces of the original silvering, and the piece remains handsome and heavily constructed. It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches, or 6.35 cm, tall and just over 1 1/2 inches, or 3.81 cm, across the widest point of the wings.
Fritz Todt became leader of Organisation Todt in 1938, a paramilitary construction organization responsible for major military engineering works, including the West Wall and other fortifications. Todt also played a major role in the Four-Year Plan, German economic self-sufficiency efforts, and wartime armaments administration, serving as Minister of Armaments and Munitions and General Inspector of Water and Energy. After his death in a plane crash in February 1942 shortly after leaving Hitler’s Wolfschanze headquarters, the Dr. Fritz Todt Prize was instituted in November 1943 to recognize industrial personnel who made significant contributions to the war effort.
The award was issued in gold, silver, and steel classes depending on the assessed value of the recipient’s work, and recipients also received a monetary benefit. With its large zinc construction, cogwheel motif, remaining reverse silvering, and direct connection to German wartime industry and armaments production, this Silver Dr. Fritz Todt Prize is a rare and historically significant award for collectors of WWII German industrial, political, and home-front decorations.
Dimensions: Approximately 2 1/2 inches, or 6.35 cm, tall by just over 1 1/2 inches, or 3.81 cm, wide.
