A WWII German Army (Heer) Infantry Officer’s M38 Overseas Cap (Feldmütze M38) in high-quality field-grey doeskin wool. The cap retains its original machine-woven silver bullion national eagle, hand-stitched onto a dark green rayon base, along with a padded bullion cockade at the center.
Introduced on December 6, 1938, this model replaced the earlier visored field cap and was based on the M34 pattern used by EM/NCOs. It features silver-aluminum piping along the crown and scalloped forward panels, indicating officer rank. It also retains the white silk soutache in an inverted "V" pattern, denoting Infantry branch designation, which was officially abolished by regulation in July 1942 but often ignored and left in place.
The cap has a field-grey, enamel painted, magnetic sheet metal ventilation grommet to each side positioned just below the crown edges. The interior of the cap is fully lined in ribbed, cotton rayon and has a partial, tan leather sweatband (removed) positioned at the front forehead section. The cap is in good condition with no moth nips, as in most of this type. All original stitching.
