This is an original German WW2 Iron Cross First Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse), marked L/11 for the esteemed maker Wilhelm Deumer of Lüdenscheid. The cross features a blackened iron core with nearly all original enamel intact and a silver frame with aged patina and edge wear, including two notable surface indents.
The reverse shows an uncleaned, uniform dark finish, and is fitted with a "fat pin" style banjo clasp, block hinge, and round wire catch, typical of Deumer's manufacture. Maker mark "L/11" is cleanly stamped below the catch.
Instituted again in 1939, the Iron Cross was a symbol of bravery and military merit. The First Class version was awarded for acts of valor above and beyond the requirements of the Second Class. Wilhelm Deumer was one of a small number of authorized wartime medal manufacturers, making this a highly collectible example.
