This is a rare, premier example of aTransitional M16 German helmet, finished in wartime black with double SS decals, and bearing an early "S" stamp forSS-Verfügungstruppe (SS-VT), the precursor to the Waffen-SS. The shell is an original WWI-era M16 model, repurposed by the Third Reich in the early years of Nazi militarization and repainted in gloss black for political and ceremonial use.
TheGerman Waffen Army decalis approximately50% present, while theSS runes decal remains well preserved with about 80% intact, unusually high for surviving examples. The liner is the correct three-pad leather configuration, mounted with the early aluminum band system and original drawstring. The chinstrap also remains intact, showing expected wartime wear.
This rare example, with confirmed configuration, early SS-VT stamp, and untouched interior components, represents an elite piece of SS militaria and a striking artifact from the transitional period of Germany's rearmament and political consolidation in the 1930s.
