German WW2 Wehrmacht Police Gorget with Chain - Marked "L"

This original German WW2 Police Gorget Breastplate features a metallic front with the central eagle and swastika emblem, showcasing a rich aged patina. The gorget retains its complete suspension neck chain, which appears to be marked with a “B” and an “L” The “L” stamp is particularly significant, it stands for Landjaegerei, or Rural Constabulary, of the Prussian Police. Between 1932 and 1937, the Prussian police employed letter codes to identify various branches, and “L” specifically denoted the Landjaegerei, the rural law enforcement body responsible for maintaining order outside major cities.

The back clasp and one of the affixing hooks are also marked “L,” further supporting its assignment to the Landjaegerei. The reverse is covered in original non-fluorescing black felt with two functional mounting hooks. The piece retains excellent integrity and character, showing light wear and toning from honest age.

These gorgets were worn by military and paramilitary police units, most notably the Feldgendarmerie, as highly visible symbols of authority while performing duties such as traffic direction, field discipline, and prisoner supervision. Known colloquially as “chain dogs”, these units were instantly recognizable by their reflective gorgets, which served both symbolic and practical purposes, especially in low-light or nighttime operations.
