This is an original German WWII Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, a wartime example produced during the Second World War and marked in 800 silver. The Knight’s Cross represented Germany’s premier award for extreme bravery in combat or outstanding military leadership, positioned above the Iron Cross 1st Class and awarded to a relatively small number of recipients. Authentic wartime examples, particularly those bearing identifiable maker codes, remain among the most important and desirable German military decorations.
This example exhibits crisp, well-defined beaded rims and a sharply detailed central German ensign, displaying excellent relief and balanced proportions. The finish shows a mellow greyish patina throughout, consistent with age and careful handling. The reverse lower arm is clearly dated “1939”, and beneath the ribbon loop are the correct “800” silver content mark and the “5” maker code, attributed to Hermann Aurich, a recognized wartime manufacturer of Knight’s Crosses. The overall profile, strike, and finish are consistent with known original Aurich-produced examples.
The award is accompanied by its original tri-color Knight’s Cross ribbon, retaining intact button eyelets and exhibiting honest patina from period use. The ribbon’s weave and coloration remain strong, complementing the cross and reinforcing the integrity of the set as a complete wartime piece. A genuine wartime Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross marked to Hermann Aurich with the “5” PK code is rare and highly sought after, making this an outstanding centerpiece for an advanced collection of German WWII orders and decorations.
Condition is consistent with age and service, with no distractions to the overall presentation. Detail remains sharp, surfaces retain their character, and the medal presents with excellent visual balance.
