This exceptional German WWII Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler SS Heimwehr “Danzig” painted award plate is a one-of-a-kind and extremely rare porcelain presentation piece manufactured by Hutschenreuther Selb Bavaria. The plate is intricately decorated for the SS Heimwehr Danzig, an SS formation established in the Free City of Danzig before the outbreak of the Second World War. The central artwork depicts a soldier in Waffen-SS uniform, with the Totenkopf motif prominently displayed at the top center. Two flags appear in the background, representing the Free City of Danzig and the SS Heimwehr Danzig unit. The inscription translates to “We are all the Home Guard of Danzig!” The reverse bears the Hutschenreuther Selb Bavaria company stamp, including the Hutschenreuther logo and the mark “Modell des Amtes Schönheit der Arbeit”, or Model of the Beauty of Labor office, a mark associated with German production during the Nazi era.
SS Heimwehr Danzig, also known as Heimwehr Danzig or Danzig Home Defense, was officially established on June 20, 1939, when the Danzig Senate under Albert Forster created its own armed force. A cadre of the unit helped form the Danzig SS Wachsturmbann “Eimann.” The formation fought alongside the German Army against Polish forces during the invasion of Poland and was later absorbed into the 3rd SS Totenkopf Division, ceasing to exist as an independent unit. Material connected specifically to SS Heimwehr Danzig is highly specialized and historically significant due to its direct connection to the Free City of Danzig, the opening phase of the war, and early Waffen-SS organization.
This plate is the type of SS artifact that advanced collectors rarely have the opportunity to pursue. Only a handful of plates in this style are known, all reportedly connected to SS subjects, and no two examples are understood to be identical. The Hutschenreuther manufacture, rare Danzig unit subject, detailed hand-painted artwork, Totenkopf imagery, period inscription, and institutional reverse marking combine to create a museum-level SS presentation piece with tremendous visual and historical impact.
