This exceptionally rare German WWII SS Heimwehr “Danzig” painted award plate is a highly detailed and visually striking example, produced by Hutschenreuther Selb Bavaria, one of Germany’s most respected porcelain manufacturers. The plate is hand-decorated with intricate artwork depicting a Waffen-SS soldier, with the Totenkopf motif prominently featured at the top, surrounded by symbolic elements tied to the unit.

The scene includes two flags in the background, one representing the Free City of Danzig, and the other the SS Heimwehr “Danzig” unit, an early SS formation established in June 1939 prior to the outbreak of World War II. This unit participated in the invasion of Poland and was later absorbed into the 3rd SS Totenkopf Division, ceasing to exist as an independent formation. The inscription on the plate translates to “We are all the Home Guard of Danzig!”, reinforcing its strong unit identity and ideological messaging.

The reverse bears the Hutschenreuther Selb Bavaria maker’s mark, along with the designation “Modell des Amtes Schönheit der Arbeit”, confirming production during the 1933–1945 period under the German labor and design office system.

Historical Context

Plates of this type were produced in extremely limited numbers, often as presentation or commemorative pieces tied to specific units or organizations. Examples associated with SS formations are particularly scarce, and no two are exactly alike, as each features unique artistic detailing. Their combination of fine porcelain craftsmanship and highly specific unit representation makes them some of the most distinctive and seldom-seen forms of SS-related memorabilia.

Condition

  • Excellent overall presentation with strong artwork detail
  • Clear maker’s mark to reverse
  • Displays exceptionally well as a centerpiece artifact

A true one-of-a-kind display piece, representing a rare intersection of SS unit history, wartime artistry, and German porcelain artistry. Opportunities to acquire examples of this type are exceedingly limited.
