This rare and heavily marked Imperial German artillery hanger machete is a standout example of late 19th to early 20th-century military utility weapons. It bears the maker’s mark “P.D.L.” for Paul Dinger of Lüneburg, as well as a crowned “JR” inspector’s proof stamp, identifying the piece as post-1893 production.

Of particular historical interest are the multiple regimental markings deeply stamped into the quillon, providing a fascinating glimpse into the weapon’s long service life:

  •     32.A.E.2.2 – Final assignment: 32nd Infantry Regiment, weapon number 2
  •     12.A.F.5.12 and 28.A.E.3.2 – Earlier assignments to the 12th Regiment (weapon 12) and 28th Regiment (weapon 2) respectively, both of which are lined out, indicating official reissue.

These crossed-out regimental stamps attest to the sword’s long operational history, having passed between multiple owners and units. Such markings are rarely found in this sequence and serve as direct evidence of extended front-line service across multiple regiments, enhancing the piece's provenance and desirability.

The machete features a gold-toned hilt and fittings, adding visual elegance to its otherwise utilitarian design. The broad, heavy blade is characteristic of the machete-hanger hybrid used by artillery and support troops—designed for both combat and field labor.

This weapon is not only a striking collector’s piece, but also a documentary artifact of Germany’s pre-WWI military logistics and regimental structure. Its layered markings and field use make it one of the most storied edged weapons in our militaria collection.
