This is a beautifully preserved pair of Imperial German World War 1 Officer’s Epaulettes, each adorned with the number “38”, indicating service with the 38th Infantry Division, a significant formation within the Imperial German Army. The epaulettes feature gilded metallic tops with silver trim and a subtle red backing, denoting line infantry status. Housed in a custom green felt and wood frame, they are ideal for preservation and striking presentation.
The German 38th Infantry Division (not a single regiment) was formed in 1899 and served with distinction through the duration of World War I before being disbanded in 1919. Initially headquartered in Erfurt under the XI Army Corps, the division fought in some of the most pivotal campaigns of the war. It began operations on the Western Front, notably in Belgium during the capture of Namur, then shifted to the Eastern Front for the First Battle of the Masurian Lakes and the Gorlice-Tarnów Offensive. By late 1915, the division returned west and participated in major engagements including Verdun, the Somme, Arras, and Passchendaele, ultimately playing a defensive role during the Allied offensives of 1918. Allied intelligence classified it as a “good division,” placing it in the upper ranks of German field formations by war’s end.
Epaulettes such as these were worn on parade or formal dress uniforms, serving as visual identifiers of an officer’s unit and status. This set offers a rare, elegant glimpse into the personal regalia of a German officer who likely served through the trials of the First World War. A historically rich and visually impressive addition to any WWI collection.
