This impressive late 17th century European crossbow, prominently dated “Ano 1695”, is attributed to German, French, or English manufacture and features richly decorated bone inlaid wooden stocks with engraved plaques bearing owner initials on both sides. The crossbow is fitted with large, heavy iron bow limbs, emphasizing strength and durability. Overall length measures approximately 29 1/4 inches, with a bow spread of 27 1/2 inches, giving the piece a commanding and substantial presence suitable for both display and study.

In addition to the 1695 date, the piece bears the marking “MCL”. This inscription may represent Roman numerals for 1150, raising the intriguing possibility that the iron bow limbs could originate from a significantly earlier medieval crossbow and were later refitted or incorporated into a more elaborate hunting or sporting crossbow in 1695. Alternatively, “MCL” may represent the initials of a historical owner or maker. Further scholarly research is encouraged, as this detail presents an opportunity for deeper attribution and study. Dated examples from the late 17th century are already desirable, and the potential presence of earlier components only enhances the historical intrigue of the piece.

By the late 1600s, crossbows had largely transitioned from battlefield weapons to specialized roles in hunting, sport, and ceremonial ownership. Decorated examples such as this were often commissioned by affluent individuals, and bone inlay work reflects the continuation of medieval artistic traditions well into the early modern period. Large, dated crossbows with intact decorative elements and engraved markings are increasingly scarce on the market. This example stands out for its size, layered historical possibilities, and strong visual authority, making it a compelling centerpiece for advanced collections of European arms.
