This exceptional and rare Medieval European Knight Type XXI sword, dating approximately to 1470 to 1580, is a highly attractive early example featuring a broad 31 inch multi-fullered blade, a down-turned iron guard, and a large Style J hollow chamfered wheel pommel. The form is noted as being influenced by the cinqueda tradition, with a downturned guard profile that presents both strength and visual authority. The sword has been professionally cleaned at a museum level and remains very well preserved, retaining much life in both blade and mounts, with a sturdy structure and highly presentable excavated character. Overall length measures approximately 37.5 inches.
Type XXI swords represent a transitional moment in European edged weapon development as battlefield needs and armor technology evolved. Broad blades with multiple fullers provided a balance of rigidity, weight distribution, and cutting authority, while the downturned guard and wheel pommel architecture speak to late medieval and early Renaissance preferences in both function and aesthetics. Swords of this class were carried by men of rank and were built with an eye toward both warfare and status, making surviving examples historically significant and highly studied.
True medieval knightly swords with this level of preservation, form integrity, and visual presence are increasingly difficult to obtain. Collectors value early Type XXI examples for rarity, scholarship, and sheer appeal, and this sword offers all three in a single compelling package. It is a centerpiece weapon, the kind of artifact that anchors a serious collection and draws immediate attention in any room.
