A striking and well-preserved example of a Crusader-era longsword, this weapon embodies the martial ethos of high medieval Europe. Classified as an Oakeshott Type XI, the blade spans an impressive 38.6 inches in total length, with a wide fuller running nearly its entire length, indicative of the style’s purpose-built design for both slashing and thrusting. The sword is outfitted with a distinct Style G disc pommel, deeply engraved with a Christian cross, and a straight, utilitarian Style 1 crossguard measuring 7 inches wide. Together, these elements point toward a knightly weapon forged during a time of religious warfare, chivalric codes, and territorial expansion.
Type XI swords emerged during the early 12th century, likely influenced by surviving Viking-age forms but quickly adapted to the evolving needs of mounted knights and foot soldiers engaged in campaigns across Europe and the Holy Land. The design prioritized reach, agility, and the ability to pierce mail with well-placed thrusts, while retaining powerful cutting capability against lightly armored foes. These swords became widely used during the Crusades, particularly from the First through the Third Crusade, and remained in favor through the 14th century.
The engraved cross on the pommel speaks to the sword’s likely ownership by a Christian warrior, possibly a knight or sergeant-at-arms who fought in service of a feudal lord, military order, or religious cause. The simplicity of the fittings suggests early manufacture, prior to the elaborate hilt ornamentation that emerged in later Gothic swords.
