This original Napoleonic-era fighting axe dates to the early 19th century and remains in good, honest condition. The steel axe head displays a smooth surface with darkened areas from age and use, while the wooden handle is original and well-preserved. The head is attractively shaped and reinforced with two iron straps along the sides of the neck, a functional feature intended to strengthen the haft-to-head junction. The axe measures approximately 16.3 inches in overall length, with an 8.6-inch head and a 3.2-inch cutting blade.

Fighting axes of this type were utilitarian weapons, often associated with irregular forces, naval personnel, or close-quarters combat during the Napoleonic period. Their compact form made them effective tools for both combat and daily use, particularly in maritime and port environments. The reinforced neck construction reflects practical design priorities of the era, emphasizing durability and reliability in harsh conditions.

Surviving Napoleonic-era edged weapons with original components are increasingly difficult to obtain, especially examples with clear maritime associations. This axe represents a compelling crossover between military history and nautical tradition, making it an appealing acquisition for collectors of early 19th century arms, naval artifacts, or European military history.
