This United Kingdom Order of the British Empire Officer’s Badge, Military Division is a Type I example dating to the 1917-1937 period and is complete with its original case of issue. The badge is struck in silver and features the portraits of Queen Mary and King George V on the obverse, surrounded by the motto “FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE”. The reverse bears the cypher of George V and is marked “SG”, denoting Garrard, along with silver hallmarks including the lion passant, London city mark, and date mark. The badge measures approximately 48.8 mm wide by 63.8 mm high, inclusive of the integral crown suspension, and weighs approximately 25.1 grams including the ribbon. It remains on its original Type I ribbon and is in extremely fine condition with minor wear.
The Order of the British Empire was instituted by King George V on June 4, 1917, during the First World War, to recognize distinguished service to the British Empire in both civil and military divisions. Type I badges, used from 1917 to 1937, are especially desirable because they represent the original form of the Order and feature the portraits of King George V and Queen Mary. Military Division examples are particularly collectible within the field of British orders and decorations, especially when maker marked, hallmarked, and retained with their original presentation case.
This is a refined and highly complete British order with excellent collector appeal. The Type I 1917-1937 form, Military Division classification, Garrard SG maker mark, full silver hallmarks, original ribbon, original case of issue, and Major Florida Collection provenance make it a strong acquisition for collectors of British medals, orders of chivalry, World War I decorations, and cased awards of the British Empire.
