This rare 17th to 18th-century Mughal Indian pata sword, or gauntlet sword, is an exciting early example featuring a large traditional hilt forged from dramatically patterned, highly active Damascus steel. The gauntlet-style handguard includes a silvered armor cover with cross pattern decoration, creating a bold and distinctive presentation. The weapon is mounted with a broad double-edged blade of semi-flexible structure, possibly wootz steel, though the watered pattern is difficult to confirm beneath the attractive dark patina. The sword remains solid, overall intact, restrained in decoration, exceptionally well balanced, and visually suited to the quick, deadly style associated with Indian warrior arms. It measures approximately 42 1/2 inches overall with a 31 1/2 inch blade.
The pata, also known as the patta, originated in the Indian subcontinent and later influenced weapon forms across Asia and Europe. Its defining feature is the integrated gauntlet handguard, which encases and protects the hand while allowing the blade to be used in powerful thrusting and slashing movements. In Mughal and broader Indian martial culture, the pata was associated with elite warriors, cavalry, and battlefield skill, and its dramatic form remains one of the most recognizable weapons of South Asian arms and armor.
With its early date range, active Damascus gauntlet hilt, silvered armor cover, cross pattern decoration, dark-patinated double-edged blade, and impressive scale, this Mughal pata is a highly desirable and display-worthy Indian sword. It offers tremendous appeal for collectors of Islamic arms, Indian warrior weapons, Mughal material culture, and rare gauntlet swords.
Dimensions: Blade length: 31 1/2 inches. Overall length: 42 1/2 inches.
