This historically significant French Revolutionary Ecole de Mars short sword, dated to 1795, was designed for cadets of the short-lived Military Academy established in Paris during the French Revolution. The weapon features a 19 inch diamond-section blade, fitted with a brass hilt of standard form and down-curving steel quillons terminated with brass finials. The sword is accompanied by its brass-mounted scabbard and measures approximately 26.5 inches overall, with a blade length of approximately 19.25 inches. This example is believed to represent an early model, possibly a prototype.

The Ecole de Mars was founded as an ideological training ground for revolutionary youth, intended to instill republican values alongside military discipline. Weapons issued to its cadets were symbolic instruments of the Revolution, embodying the principles of civic duty and national identity. Designed under the influence of the artist Jacques-Louis David, these short swords occupy a unique place in the material culture of the French Revolution.

Authentic Ecole de Mars weapons are exceptionally rare due to limited production and the academy's brief existence. Early or prototype examples are especially coveted, making this piece a museum-level acquisition for collectors of Revolutionary-era arms and political history.
