This is an original German WWI M18 Stahlhelm, introduced in 1918 as the final wartime development of Germany’s First World War helmet program. The M18 pattern is characterized by its improved liner system, with the chinstrap mounted directly to the liner band rather than the shell. Due to rearmament demands and material shortages, surviving M18 helmets were refurbished and reissued for service during WWII, resulting in examples that bridge both world wars.
This helmet was reissued with a double-decal configuration, featuring an SS shield on the right side and a swastika shield on the left side. Both decals remain present and visible, showing wear consistent with age and service use, which is typical for helmets of this type. The steel shell displays several areas of surface rust consistent with long-term aging and wartime use.
The interior retains its original leather liner and leather chinstrap, both attached and in good overall shape. Condition throughout is consistent with period use and storage. This helmet represents a historically significant example of a WWI-manufactured M18 Stahlhelm later returned to service during WWII, well suited for collectors of German militaria.
