Rare Late Roman Lamp Mold Gypsum Heart Clover Design 5th–6th Century AD

This is a one of a kind collectible Rare Roman Oil Lamp Mold, dating to the Late Period of the Empire (5th–6th century A.D.). Crafted from gypsum, this surviving mold half is a rare artifact used in the production of clay oil lamps—an essential element of Roman domestic life. Its geometric heart and clover motifs suggest a symbolic or romantic purpose.

These molds were often broken after use, making intact examples like this incredibly scarce. It offers a tangible link to the craftsmanship and symbolic language of late antiquity.

History
Lamps illuminated homes, shrines, and streets across the empire. By the 5th–6th century A.D., Christianity was widespread, and lamps frequently held symbolic meaning. This mold's survival provides insight into late Roman manufacturing and spiritual design.

From the Antiques Center of York. Originally acquired from an old English collection formed in the 1970s. Includes Certificate of Authenticity from Ancient Antiquities.

Condition: Shows light to moderate wear, minor imperfections possible. A very fine and rare example of Roman artisan tools.
