This 15th century medieval iron military fork halberd head represents a scarce and highly specialized form of late medieval polearm warfare. Forged entirely of iron, this example survives in good original condition, retaining a dark, age-earned surface patina consistent with centuries of oxidation and use. The piece measures approximately 11.8 inches in total length and 2.3 inches in width, with both opposing tines extending roughly 5.9 inches, giving the weapon an imposing and functional profile.
Military forks such as this were purpose-built defensive weapons, most commonly employed in the protection of castles, fortifications, and artillery positions. Their distinctive twin-pronged form allowed defenders to push scaling ladders from stone walls, control enemy movement, and keep attackers at a lethal distance. These implements were also used to defend cannons and gun crews from cavalry assaults, enabling foot soldiers to entangle, repel, or severely injure mounted attackers without closing into sword range. As warfare evolved in the 15th century, such polearms became critical tools in adapting medieval defenses to increasingly aggressive siege and battlefield tactics.
Examples of medieval military forks are notably rare today, particularly those surviving in untouched condition. A closely comparable example is preserved within the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art collection, underscoring both the historical importance and institutional recognition of this weapon form. This piece originates from an old gentleman’s collection in Edinburgh, Scotland, further reinforcing its authenticity and period character. Well-suited for advanced collectors of medieval arms, museum displays, or serious historical study, this halberd fork head stands as a compelling artifact from the defensive heart of late medieval warfare.
Provenance: Old gentleman’s collection, Edinburgh, Scotland.
