This is an exceptionally large and rare Viking-era double-headed battle axe dating to approximately 900–1100 AD. The forged iron head measures nearly 14 inches across and features classic Viking-era shaping with twin crescent blades. The metal shows areas of surface flaking and is very brittle, consistent with its age and archaeological preservation. This piece represents a fine and incredibly rare example of early medieval weaponry, hard to find in such size and condition.
Double-headed axes of this scale are extremely uncommon in Viking archaeology and likely served a ceremonial or symbolic role, possibly wielded by a high-ranking warrior or used in status display. Viking axes were versatile tools of both warfare and daily life, but this massive specimen stands out for its formidable size and craftsmanship.
