This is an original U.S. Model 1902 Army Officer’s Saber, a pattern still in ceremonial use today and one of the longest-serving sword designs in American military history. This example dates to the World War II era and was privately purchased, as was standard for officers.

The 32 5/8-inch curved, broad, fullered blade is heavily engraved, featuring classic U.S. motifs including “U.S.” markings, eagles, flags, military arms, and decorative foliage, extending across approximately two-thirds of the blade. The length of the blade is exceptional and likely reflects the stature of the original owner, as these sabers were custom-selected rather than standardized issue.

Notably, the blade is named and inscribed:
“JTAC ROTC John C. Hyatt – BEST 1st YEAR CADET – 1936”

This inscription identifies the owner as a standout cadet during his ROTC training, likely preparing for service in the U.S. Army Air Corps prior to the establishment of the U.S. Air Force. While his exact wartime service remains unknown, the inscription places him firmly within the generation of officers who would soon be called into World War II service, potentially flying missions over Europe.

The saber retains its composition finger-stall grip, with the hilt and metal scabbard showing virtually all original plating intact. The scabbard features two intact suspension rings and only a minor crease or dent, consistent with age and careful handling. This pattern is documented in The American Sword by Peterson (Reference #77).

A historically rich and visually striking example, combining named provenance, wartime context, and exceptional condition, ideal for advanced collectors of U.S. military edged weapons.
