A dignified and well-preserved 1860 model sword with post-war production traits.
This U.S. Civil War-era Staff & Field Officer Sword was produced by M.C. Lilley & Co. of Columbus, Ohio, bearing the engraved initials “M.A.” A post-war example based on wartime design, the sword retains all the elegance and authority associated with Union officer weaponry. The finely etched blade and ornate hilt show the era’s detailed craftsmanship, with the grip wrapped in sharkskin or eel skin and bound with original wire.
Stamped “Made in Germany” (partially visible), this piece combines American military form with European forging quality. The blade remains secure, though the butt spring is missing—a replaceable part noted by collectors. Slight handle movement is present, potentially by design.
Although it lacks a sheath, the sword remains a dramatic and evocative relic, perfect for display or as part of a Civil War collection.
