This United States Merchant Marine Mariner's Medal is an important American World War II–era award designed by sculptor Paul Manship and commissioned in 1943. The medal served as the Merchant Marine's equivalent to the Purple Heart, recognizing mariners who were wounded, injured, or exposed to danger as a result of enemy action while serving at sea during wartime. This example is in excellent conditio with its ribbon attached as to its original construction. Light wear on the ribbon while the medal itself remains in excellent condition with some light tarnishing and wear due to age and exposure.
The medal was awarded for qualifying service between December 7, 1941, and July 25, 1947, with all further awards suspended in 1956. Approximately 6,635 examples were issued for World War II service. Merchant mariners operated under hazardous conditions throughout the conflict, often aboard unarmed or lightly defended vessels tasked with transporting vital supplies across contested waters.
Today, the Mariner's Medal remains a respected and collectible decoration, valued for its limited issuance and its association with the Merchant Marine's wartime service. It represents a meaningful addition to collections focused on U.S. military awards, naval history, or World War II–era decorations.
