Exceptional and historically significant U.S. Marine Corps Pacific Theater veteran bring-back grouping, centered around a captured Imperial Japanese Army 55th Infantry Regiment Rising Sun flag and identified to U.S. Marine Corps Lt. John F. Hunt Jr. This remarkable grouping combines personal U.S. Marine Corps artifacts with a documented Japanese battlefield trophy, creating a compelling and highly displayable World War II collection.
The grouping includes a 1951-dated jacket named to Lt. John F. Hunt Jr., his USMC belt, U.S. Marine Corps dog tags, and a captured Imperial Japanese Army 55th Infantry Regiment flag. Accompanying the flag is a translation prepared by Dan King (9/2/2021) identifying the flag to the 55th Infantry Regiment, 8th Company, 3rd Platoon, 4th Squad, with the name Shigeo Etoh appearing among the inscriptions. A copy of the translation paperwork is included with the grouping.
The captured flag itself represents the centerpiece of the collection. Featuring the classic Rising Sun design associated with the Imperial Japanese Army, the flag is of two-piece construction and retains its original hanging loops. The included research traces the history of the 55th Infantry Regiment, a unit established in 1905 that later saw combat in China, Malaya, and Burma during the Second World War. The regiment participated in major campaigns including operations at Shanghai, Khota Baru, Mandalay, and Meiktila, making this a direct connection to a documented Imperial Japanese Army combat formation. Preserved in its captured condition, the flag remains a tangible artifact of the Pacific War and the experiences of the American servicemen who brought such souvenirs home.
