his rare plug bayonet/fighting dagger dates a full century before the American Revolutionary War era, circa 1680–1710, and is likely of French military origin, a nation that would later play a critical role in aiding American independence. It features a rare reverse crossguard, an uncommon configuration for its time, and a reversible ebony grip with elegant silver mounts, marking it as both a weapon and a statement of rank or distinction.

The plug bayonet, which preceded the more familiar socket type, was designed to insert directly into the muzzle of a musket, instantly converting it into a short pike for close-quarters fighting. Its dual role as a dagger when removed made it a practical and deadly sidearm. By the time of the American Revolution, these were largely obsolete in Europe but could still be found in colonial theaters where supply chains were inconsistent and older weapons remained in circulation.

This blade's unique construction and French origin align it with known military patterns of the late 17th to early 18th century. A closely related specimen appears in Swords and Blades of the American Revolution by George C. Neumann (p.34, fig. #8B), underscoring the historical importance and rarity of this form.

A superb early example of European edged weapon evolution and a tangible link to the transatlantic military traditions that preceded and shaped the Revolutionary War.
