This British Anglo-Egyptian Sudan officer sword was made by Wilkinson Sword Co. Ltd., London, circa 1899, and is a very rare example associated with the beginning of British control in Sudan. The sword is fitted with its original leather and metal scabbard and features Anglo-Egyptian Sudan symbolism on both the basket hilt and blade. The blade is well marked and inscribed, with a visible proof mark, and was cleaned and oiled on June 29, 2022. The sword is described as having been made for a high-ranking officer during the early Anglo-Egyptian Sudan period.
The Anglo-Egyptian Sudan was established after the British-led reconquest of Sudan at the end of the 19th century, following the campaigns connected to Kitchener and the defeat of Mahdist forces. Officer swords from this period are historically important because they reflect the military and administrative transition into Anglo-Egyptian rule. The use of Sudanese and Egyptian symbolism on the hilt and blade adds major visual and historical interest.
